The lightbulb moment that started it all

It all started in our office at the tail end of COVID-19. We had just started to work on-site again but wanted to exercise a high level of caution, so we looked for ways we could keep the office environment as safe as possible during the transition back to work and beyond. When we used our conference room, we opened the windows to improve air circulation. However, this process involved a lot of wasted energy on heating and air conditioning. We wanted to find a way to easily enjoy clean air while also conserving our resources.

From there, an idea was born.

A lightbulb was mounted on the wall and attached to it a CO2 sensor. When CO2 levels in the room were low, the light would be green. When carbon dioxide levels started to rise, it would turn yellow, and then red when levels were high. Anytime the light would turn yellow or red, we would open the window and a sensor in the window frame would turn off the air conditioning until the window was closed again once the light turned green.

But why stop there? What if all the windows in our building had the same technology, and the property manager who runs the building had the ability to better manage and optimize HVAC usage? The vision became clear: property managers in office buildings, multifamily apartment buildings, or government facilities having access to information on every unit inside of every building they manage across the country, including water lines, security, air conditioning, and so much more.

We spent years developing the software to make these larger-scale “Smart Buildings” a reality. ROCiQ’s mission is to deliver a better way to manage properties, reduce costs, and increase value for property managers and tenants alike.
